While many associate Washington with rain and forests, eastern Washington is a high desert shaped by the rain shadow of the Cascades. Sagebrush, sand dunes, and strong winds define the landscape, while the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima Rivers bring life to the region and support agriculture.

Tri-Cities, Washington is also known for “Kennewick Man”, one of the oldest complete skeletons. In 1996, two men snuck into the boat races and stubbled across a skeleton which was later discovered to be 9,000 year old man. After years of debate, the remains were given back to the Columbia Plateau Tribes in 2017 for a proper burial.

ETHEL, WASHINGTON

Tri-Cities/Ethel Washington is home to the Hanford Nuclear Reactor which produced plutonium from 1944 to 1987. In 1987 the largest nuclear waste clean-up started after the discovery of 400 billion gallons of contaminated liquids and nuclear waste leaked or dumped into the soil.
