The Album Cover project explores sound connections between visual and musical arts through integrated illustration. Choosing the artist Amy Winehouse because of her unique funk jazz sound and unique iconic figures, while also using 2 concepts of pattern and appropriation from “Visual Communication”. Pattern was used in the many instruments throughout the design and use of color to intentionally break the pattern. The popularity of vinyl cover art started with jazz music in the 50’s. The heavy use of typography, color, and shape to describe the artist, inspired the final design. In the zoetrope, the birds are also a guitar, that represent the many tattoos she has, as well as being known to play the Fender Stratocaster. Overall my design for the album “Back to Black” uses pattern and appropriation while also rebranding an identity that caters to her and her audience.
